Courses for adults

This age category includes students aged 17 and older.

After a written test and a short interview in a foreign language a student joins the most appropriate group according to his/ her level of language proficiency.

As a rule each group consists of 6-9 students. All the lessons, even at the Beginner level, are carried out in a foreign language. We create all the necessary conditions at our lessons to make communication in a foreign language natural and easy for learners.

You may have lessons of 90 minutes three times a week, or lessons of 135 minutes twice a week.

BEGINNER and ELEMENTARY LEVELS

The Beginner level (168 academic hours) includes an introductory course of phonetics and pronunciation, as well as the basics of grammar and vocabulary. The course being studied is New Headway Beginner (Oxford University Press).

At the Elementary level (180 academic hours; A1 in CEFR [Common European Framework of Reference] classification) students continue to learn basic grammar, enrich their vocabulary, and master their speaking and listening skills. The course being studied is New English File Elementary (Oxford University Press).

The basics of grammar are 5 major tenses, as well as most important rules and constructions which enable a student to communicate productively.

This level may be roughly divided into three stages:
• During the first stage students learn to get acquainted, to introduce themselves, to talk about their family, job and hobbies. They can ask what time it is, speak to a waiter in a café, and write a simple letter.
• On completing the second stage learners can describe their city and apartment, ask for directions, talk over the phone, plan a holiday abroad, describe past experiences and historical events, as well as communicate in a shop or restaurant and write postcards.
• After the third stage students can describe their country; compare things; describe clothes and pay compliments; discuss films; speak about plans, feelings and emotions. The knowledge obtained at this level is enough for travelling and solving routine problems.

PRE-INTERMEDIATE LEVEL (180 academic hours; A2 in CEFR classification)

At this level students study grammar more thoroughly, by small portions, and it is integrated into speaking models of communication. Developing listening skills and enriching their vocabulary are the core aims at this stage.

Learners study with New English File Pre-Intermediate (Oxford University Press). This book contains up-to-date language and is based on the Communicative Approach. The topics connected with real life communication are covered in this course. Students learn to describe themselves; express their opinions; communicate in airports, hotels, banks, hospitals, at the chemist’s; talk about their job, find the way out of problematic situations; discuss economic and social problems; give advice and write official letters.

On completing this stage a learner is able to discuss a wide range of topics, from family affairs to mass media, new technologies, and law.

The course is based on the New Cutting Edge Intermediate book (Longman).

UPPER-INTERMEDIATE LEVEL (B2 in CEFR classification)

The distinguishing feature of this level is fluent and literate speech.
