City&Guilds International ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) examination is a part of City&Guilds International, which is the second largest examination board in Great Britain conducting English examinations for non-native speakers.

The City&Guilds examination system was established in1878. With 8,500 test centres in 100 countries, City&Guilds works closely with the British council and meets the European and international standards.  It is also recognised by the UK Border Agency as an approved English language test. Every year more than 1,800,000 people aged 7-65 confirm their knowledge at City&Guilds examinations.

became the City&Guilds international branch office 14 years ago. Andrew Bayley, the Managing Director of , has visited all the local test centres, and nowadays acts as an examiner as well. Krasnoyarsk English learners first got the opportunity to take the exam in 2007, and since that time it has been regularly held once a year. The examination sessions are organised by O’key Language School and the Association for Language Education and International Cooperation (ALEIC).

There are six levels linked to those of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages:

A1 – Preliminary

A2 – Access

B1 – Achiever

B2 – Communicator

C1 – Expert

C2 - Mastery

The examination includes two parts: written (ESOL), containing listening, reading and writing tests, and spoken (SESOL) – an interview with the examiner. The first part lasts for 2-3 hours depending on the level, the second one – no longer than 15 minutes.

ADVANTAGES OF THE CITY&GUILDS EXAMINATIONS

This is the only exam allowing learners to choose what part to take at one session – written, spoken, or both. It means that a candidate needs to pay only for the part he has chosen. Besides, the two parts are available at different levels. The ESOL examination is ideal for those who have no experience in passing international exams and want to assess their skills.

INTERESTING TOPICS. The Spoken examination has a wide range of topics, from communicating in everyday social situations to sharing opinions on serious philosophic issues. All that you have seen on TV, heard on the radio, or read on the Internet may prove useful at the exam.
