Communicative Language Teaching

From the first day of its work, O’KEY School has been applying the Communicative Approach to teaching foreign languages. This approach has been successfully used worldwide for over 40 years and now is globally recognised among the most effective and up-to-date methods of language teaching.

This method helps to develop all basic skills: speaking, writing, reading, and listening. At the same time, students study grammar and enrich their vocabulary. Another important thing is that learners are immersed into culture, geography, and history of the target language country. Reading foreign press, watching TV-programmes, and listening to music all help to evoke interest in studies and enhance motivation.

Communication is the fundamental part of the Communicative Approach. That is why playing games, pair work, making up and acting out dialogues, and discussing relevant topics are widely used at the lessons. Discussion games, aimed at expressing one’s point of view on some particular issue, are part and parcel of the method. Teacher’s task at this point is to help the students by prompting, asking questions, serving as a resource and facilitator. The topics of discussions can vary from music and films to problems of ecology, unemployment, and relationships. Thus, students immerse themselves into language environment, which helps them overcome language barrier and learn to express their ideas clearly.

Another essential feature of the Communicative Approach is that all communication is executed solely in the target language. You should stop using your mother tongue as a means of communication to get better results in the language you learn. At the same time, you can easily understand your teacher, because he/ she gives clear instructions exploiting mainly the words you already know, as well as gestures, miming, audio and video materials, pictures, etc. to explain new words and constructions.

This method is globally recognised because of its effectiveness. You don’t have to learn grammar rules by heart, instead you are plunged into new language discovery and enjoy learning through communication and meaningful use of the target language.
