Communicative Language Teaching

Home >> About us >> Teaching Methods

From the first day of its work,  International O’key Language School has been applying the Communicative Approach to teaching foreign languages. This approach has been successfully used worldwide for over 40 years and is now globally recognised as one of the most effective and up-to-date methods of language teaching.

This method helps to develop all basic skills: speaking, writing, reading, and listening. At the same time, students study grammar and enrich their vocabulary. Another important element of language learning is students' exposure to the culture, geography, and history of the target language country. Reading foreign press, watching TV-programmes, and listening to music all help to evoke interest in studies and improve motivation.

Communication is the fundamental part of the Communicative Approach. That is why the classes are rich in language games, pair work activities, role-plays, and discussions, which are interesting for the learners. Topics for discussion can vary from music and films to problems of ecology, unemployment, and relationships. Thus, students immerse themselves in the language, helping them to overcome language barriers and learn to express their ideas clearly. The teacher’s task at this point is to help the students by prompting and asking questions; serving as an organiser, facilitator and source of reference. It is how much the students speak, not the teacher, that makes the difference in student's progress.

Another essential feature of the Communicative Approach is that all communication is conducted solely in the target language. For best results in learning a language you should stop using your mother tongue as a means of communication from lesson 1. At the same time, even if you are a total beginner, the teacher is an expert at developing understanding using clear instructions and making the most of words you already know, as well as using gestures, miming, audio and video materials, and pictures, to explain new vocabulary and grammar. In our lessons, you won’t need to learn grammar rules by heart; instead you will acquire new language and can enjoy learning through communication and meaningful use of the target language.
