The Czech language belongs to the West-Slavic group of Indo-European languages, along with Slovak, Polish, Pomeranian (Kashubian), and Lusatian Sorbian. It is spoken by about 12 million people - primarily the citizens of the Czech Republic. The closest other language to Czech is Slovak. Most Czechs understand it without translation.

The Czech language uses the Latin alphabet. The peculiarity of Czech written language is the use of the following diacritical (accent) marks: háček (hook), čárka ("acute accent") and kroužek (circle). They all are presented in the word průvodčí (conductor). Diacritical marks adorn the usual set of Latin letters with so-called "hissing" sounds š [sh], č [ch], ž [zh], ř [rzh], softening consonants: ě, soft ď, ť ň and long vowel sounds: ý, á, í, é, ú/ů.
