What do you know about French?

  • Courses for ChildrenThe French language belongs to the Western Indo-European languages, together with Portuguese, Italian and Spanish, and goes back to Latin. At the heart of French is the Roman alphabet, augmented by a variety of diacritical marks: à, â, ç, è, é, ê, ë, î, ï, ô, ù, û, ü, ÿ. Reading rules are complicated by digraphs and trigraphs. But one of the main features of the language – is that it is not necessary to pronounce all the letters. For example, d, t, p, z, x, s, e at the end of words are not usually read.
  • The law of the British Parliament on the obligatory use of English in state courts was written in French.
  • In French, «assiette» means ‘the plate’ as well as ‘the mood’, or ‘the condition’. Presumably, the erroneous translation of the French expression caused the appearance of idiom "at ease".
  • A new novel of French writer Georges Perec «La disparition» came out in 1969. One of the key features of the novel was that there was no single letter e - the most frequently used letter in French. The same principle - without the letter e – was observed when the book was translated into English, German and Italian. In 2005, the novel came out in the Russian language, translated by Valery Kislov under the title "Fade". In this version you can not find the letter o, the most frequent letter in Russian.
  • French was the official language in England for over 600 years.
  • During the World War in 1812 Russian soldiers often took their officers for an enemy at night because of their habit to speak French J.
